Last Night – So Soon

July 18th, 2005 No comments

Well, we’re heading home tomorrow. Such a relaxing long vacation, yet already it’s time to leave. It has been a magical trip. Today we took a Power Cat Boat tour of the Nepali Coast, this week (and today) we snorkeled with sea turtles and amazing fish. Tomorrow we fly back to Portland. I’m sure there will be more to document over the next weeks as I get back into reality. There are so many things that we did that will be great to write about and amazing pictures to show everyone. This is a beautiful island and we’ve had a beautiful time. But now it’s time for one last check of the email, one last quick post here, and a few post cards from Eden. Then back to the bungalow to pack and get ready for the morning. Eden did blog a bit this week if you want to check that out.

So don’t want to leave, but can’t wait to get back home! By the way.. If you’re in Portland and you’ve seen the billboard for Kauai as you’re going through downtown. We launched for our boat extravaganza today out of that exact bay.. That was our view along side of a school of well over 50 spinner dolphins.. Amazing..

See you all soon..

Week One Down.. One to go

July 12th, 2005 No comments

So we’ve departed from Poipu and are heading further up the Island to the North Coast. Everyone says that the North side for the island is extremely lush and beautiful, so I’m excited to see it. They get a lot more moisture up there, so the environment should be noticeably different. Right now we’re in Kapa’a having a coffee at Small Town Coffee “It’s Old School” .. that’s their hook.. We ate breakfast across the street from where we are now, at a place called the Olympic Cafe. Finally some food that tastes like food. I tell you what, food on this island so far leaves A LOT to be desired. But we’re restocking our supplies again today and moving into our new cottage, so hopefully we’ll be cooking some tasty dinners soon enough.

Where the Eggs Were

In the Allerton Garden, part of the National Botanical Gardens. Recognize it? See the Jurassic Park Dino eggs?

Later.

Going for a Hike

July 8th, 2005 No comments

Today we’re going for a hike in Waimea canyon. Tonight we’ll try and get some more images up. We’re still having a great trip. Yesterday we spent a few hours at the beach, it was windy, then we had happy hour drinks (eh… sorta lame). The tourism spots are really just that, luckily we got the inside scoop on the beaches to go to so we’ve had beautiful spaces all to ourselves. We’re trying to stay away from those as much as possible.

Eden just went on a walk so that I could finish up getting ready so she should be getting back any minute. Then adventure for the afternoon. Until then…

Back for a Moment

June 28th, 2005 No comments

Well Tour ’05 is over and the illusive Wookie put up a marvelous hunt this year. What a great time. A week in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness – Siskiyou National Forest mountain biking with great friends, good beer and amazing trails.

A top Dutchie

Some key highlights from this year are definitely our night ride of Chrome Ridge, Multiple runs of the Jedi, and all of us CRUSHING the Expert Loop this year.

Expert Loop

I’ve put up a gallery of images that I took over the week. Unfortunately, We didn’t shoot any video like we did last year. But I can tell you that we were riding really well this year and all of us pushed ourselves to the limit.

Anyway, I hope to be able to come up with some more creative descriptions of the week in the next few days but I really wanted to get these images up for people to check out. Next Tuesday we leave for Kauai!!

T-Minus 9

June 10th, 2005 No comments

All of a sudden it’s Friday again. There was so much I was going to write about this week but damn.. I guess I didn’t get to it. So I’ll see if I can re-cap.

Saturday I went on a great ride with Gary. Sunday hrm.. no yoga but that was alright.. bagels with Ian and Danielle. Then into the week. Busy this week it seems. Work has been mellow and I finally got back to finishing Programming C# and some other various things.

Wednesday night was a blast. Hack Night is starting to become quite the event. A freelance writer came to the meeting and was interviewing all of us and hanging out. There was tons of activity around the Mississippi Network and lots of hardware hacking. Which is great to see happening… and then… since I had made my way home after work and rode my bike to the meeting. I got the bug to ride Mt. Tabor. There was still day light and it had to be done. I phoned Ivan, Ivan agreed, we rode. After tearing up Mt. Tabor I headed back to North Portland to the house. It indeed was a great evening. And I’m glad I got a chance to get on my bike in the middle of the week, about 20 miles for the evening.

And so T-Minus 9 until Tour. A week of Mountain Biking in Southern Oregon. I can not wait. For one, I’m much stronger this year than I have been in the past. For another reason, I’m very pleased with my riding so far this year. It’s going to be a great trip.

ALSO!!! Eden and I have finally booked our vacation. Kauai! And for criminy sakes I’m stoked. I really am starting to have a hard time figuring out how to make it through next week with any motivation. I’m sure I can do it.. With day dreams of Mt. Biking and staying here and here. I can make it.. I think..

ALSO ALSO.. Mom and Dad are coming to visit the first week of August! Which is going to be fantastic!

Whew.. I think there’s more too.. but that’s all I can handle.. let alone you.. If you’re still reading this Mozeltov! More later!

Some fasinating quake info..

January 11th, 2005 Comments off

The Globe

NASA has just released some information regarding what happened to the Earth after the tsunami causing quake a few weeks ago. The North Pole moved an inch.. and the whole planet changed shape a bit… that’s incredible. What’s also incredible is it’s something that really happens all the time. Check out the short article for some more info.

Albert Einstein

This is a great article. It made my lunch extreemly enjoyable today. It’s an article from the Science and Technology section of the Economist about Albert Einstein’s miracle year, 1905. Basically in 1905 he released 5 papers regarding research and discovery that he had made in the previous years and was ready to unleash them onto the world. So basically in 18 months he “he showed that atoms are real (it was still controversial at the time), presented his special theory of relativity, and put quantum theory on its feet.”

If you have a flare for science and discovery I think you’ll really enjoy the article. Even if you don’t have a large amount of technical knowledge you should still be able to understand and be amazed at what Einstein accomplished and how it’s been influencial even today.

My three favorite quotes:

“The second consequence is that the world is “non-local”. That is to say, quantum interactions occur instantaneously over arbitrarily long distances. What is more, there is no mechanism in quantum mechanics which explains how particles “communicate” to match up their quantum properties in this way. For example, if one particle is spinning in one direction, its partner must spin in the opposite. However, the first particle does not have a definite direction until it is measured (Schrödinger’s cat again), so the second particle cannot “know” how to point until a measurement is performed on the first particle, by which time the second particle may be millions of kilometres away. Einstein termed this “spooky action-at-a-distance”.”

“The idea of an invariant, which, largely because of Einstein, became central to physics in the 20th century, is something that stays constant under various transformations. A circle is invariant under rotation, because it looks the same no matter how it spins. A square, on the other hand, is invariant only under rotations of 90°. Rotate it through a right angle, or a multiple of a right angle, and it is indistinguishable from its unrotated self. Rotate it by any other angle, and it will appear different.”

“Ultimately, it was the same skill in discernment that led Einstein to the general theory of relativity. One of the consequences of the speed of light being invariant is that nothing can travel faster than it. Einstein realised this in his first relativity paper of 1905. He did not immediately see another consequence, that the invariant also implied that mass and energy are interchangeable, the rate of exchange being defined by the speed of light and governed by the one equation in physics that most people have heard of: E=mc2, in which “E” represents energy, “m” mass and “c” the speed of light. This equation, whose consequences were played out in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, occurred to him a few weeks later, and he published it in another paper, which he wrote up in November 1905.”
